EVE in the livestream: Microsoft Envision Forum 2020

This year, the Microsoft Envision Forum 2020 took place exclusively digitally on the ON24 event platform. As inclusion is also very important at digital events, the three parallel tracks were to be provided with real-time subtitles.

In times of the corona pandemic, it is important to find creative solutions to maintain or even improve on previous standards. Microsoft therefore decided to offer the event digitally with three different, parallel tracks in German and English. ON24 was used as the event platform. After the opening keynote, the livestream was to be divided into three specialist areas. The challenge here was to provide all three tracks with real-time subtitles. The following questions had to be clarified first:

  • How can subtitles be integrated into the livestream without restricting the viewing experience?
  • How can we compensate for the 15-second delay caused by the transmission?
  • How many people can access EVE at the same time?

How does EVE work in the livestream?

In principle, EVE can be integrated into a livestream using two methods. Option one: cut the finished EVE sentences out of the EVE Listener using a chroma key from a professional director and burn them into the livestream. However, this is time-consuming and not suitable for every livestream.

As a second option, ON24 offers the possibility of activating URL widgets in the live stream dashboard. This means that the listener can be displayed as a separate widget next to the livestream and can be deactivated again if required. Each viewer can have the subtitles displayed in the language of their choice.

How can I delay the real-time subtitles?

Livestream platforms such as ON24 create a delay of around 15 seconds between the real signal and the final output in the stream for the viewer. Without a delay, EVE’s subtitles would be visible in the livestream earlier than the spoken word. EVE therefore offers the option of delaying the output as required. Various settings for the listener can be configured with the help of URL parameters. The option mentioned here is called delay. The URL for the listener window must be adjusted as follows:

Before
Afterwards
URL parameters
Function
https://app.staging.starteve.ai/listener/testeventhttps://app.staging.starteve.ai/listener/testevent?delay=5000?delay=5000Delay by 5 seconds (5000 ms)
https://app.staging.starteve.ai/listener/testeventhttps://app.staging.starteve.ai/listener/testevent?delay=200?delay=5000Delay by 200 ms

How many people can access EVE at the same time?

Livestreams often have several thousand viewers at the same time. However, this is not a problem for EVE, as it is scaled accordingly. If the number of simultaneous EVE listeners for an event exceeds 10,000, please contact our support team in advance.

The stream…

… went perfectly. Technical terms were practiced in advance with the help of the dictionary: EVE recognized companies and partner names. Integration as a URL widget was possible without any problems. After a few tests, we discovered that ON24 works with an average delay of around ten seconds. We were able to compensate for this with the URL parameter. We look forward to supporting you again with the next project! 😉
